The Tobacco Industry in Zambia has a bright future despite the hiccups it is experiencing in terms of increasing production cost, the low tobacco prices, unpredictable weather pattern, etc. This is mainly because of the increasing demand for the tobacco produced in Zambia because of its high quality and excellent flavour. Currently, Zambia is unable to meet the demand for Burley and Virginia because of low production levels of tobacco. However, if farmers have access to financial sponsorship of tobacco production, if the market continues to be available and if the tobacco leaf prices improve, the Zambian tobacco industry would develop to higher levels.
There is need for the crop to be produced further as it has a positive impact on alleviation of poverty in Zambia. Any attempt to stop tobacco production will simply enhance poverty in the rural household that depend on tobacco production for their livelihood. The tobacco is produced for export.
